Artist Statement:

Katherine Ka Yi Liu (b. 1989, Los Angeles) distinguishes herself as an Asian female who stands robustly as a contemporary artist and activist. Liu grew up mostly in Hong Kong where she began her studies in the Fine Art department at the Hong Kong Arts School. Focusing on Fine Art Sculpture, Liu earned a BA in 2013 at the University of Brighton, UK, and she obtained her Masters in Fine Art Practice at The Glasgow School of Art, UK.

Sparked by an interest in deciphering diverse relationships between the individual and wider society, Liu’s practice deliberates the origin of human existence, notions of cultural, socio-politics, sociolinguistic navigation, along with the conflicts within the politics of power and gender.  By confronting the stereotype, aesthetics, the image and value systems, she unfolds her investigations through sculptural installation, sound, performance and video works to question and articulate underlying frustrations towards mortal fallacies.
