For Transmission's annual Scottish solo show, we are pleased to be joined by Edinburgh based Irineu Destourelles, presenting Tainted Verbal.
Irineu Destourelles was born in the Cape Verde islands in West Africa. He grew up in Lisbon, as Portugal struggled with the legacy of a 48-year dictatorship (1926 - 1974) with an ultra-colonial policy in Portuguese speaking Africa. Working across different media he explores the reproduction of colonial patterns of thinking in contemporary society, with a particular interest in processes of 'othering'. In 'Tainted Verbal', Irineu reflects on his experiences of living in London and Edinburgh, where social divisions are sharp and sustained in part by contemporary media culture. Through moving-image, painting and text he investigates ways in which one can legitmately question these mechanisms of 'othering' within the gallery space, whilst simultaneously addressing their social functions.
Please join us for the preview on the 1st April (7-9pm)
The show will be open from the 4th April to 6th May (11am to 5pm, Tuesday thru Saturday)
